SW Radiation Energy Balance

Postby grjonathan » Wed Aug 28, 2019 10:06 pm

Hello,

Please excuse me for what is doubtlessly a very fundamental question.

In DBManager we can assign the following properties to a material: SW Absorption, SW Reflectance and SW Transmittance. Conservation of energy requires that these three components sum to 1, but in DBManager it seems possible for the sum to be greater or less than 1.

In fact, the default material "Photoactive Concrete" has an absorption of 0.53, transmittance of 0, and reflectance of 0.3.

Does this mean materials can behave as sources/sinks in ENVI-met? Can PV be modeled in this way?

Hi Jonathan,

The Photoactive concrete indeed has these properties but is used for photochemical simulations. Modelling PV would be a nice feature but is not possible or even planned to be implemented, yet.

Best regards,
Tim

Thank you, Tim.

If I create my own material with (absorption+reflection+transmission) < 1, will the model become unstable?

Hi Jonathan,

I don't know if the model would become unstable but I would not see any sense in trying it out since the photochemistry module is not activated. Your suggested values will thus simply be incorrect phsycial properties for the material.

Best regards,
Tim

When starting the model these data will be corrected!
