Validity of SET in the outdoor environment

Post by Julien »

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about which thermal comfort indices I should use in biomet. I'd like to avoid UTCI since it is invalid under 0.5m/s windspeed.
I was wondering about SET : it seems to me that SET is designed for indoor spaces specifically (that's why there is an outdoor version called OUT_SET). Have you considered the validity of SET in outdoor when implanting it in biomet? Which indices do you use?

Thanks a lot.

best

Hi Julien,

I think it rather is the outdoor SET already but, as you correctly mentioned already, it is mainly used for indoor thermal comfort. However, some planners still wanted to be able to calculate the SET in Biomet as well, so we added it.
We often use PET for our analysis because we think it is the most accurate thermal comfort index.

Best regards,
Tim
